About the Unit
The Major Case Unit was formed under memoranda of understanding between participating county and municipal law enforcement agencies to pool investigative resources on major cases. The Unit operates with sworn investigators detailed from partner agencies and a small civilian support staff (analysts, records, digital evidence).
The Unit has no patrol function and does not take reports from the public. Its investigators work at the request of the agency of jurisdiction and under the direction of that agency's command and the county prosecutor.
Jurisdiction
- County support: assistance to sheriff's offices on request of the sheriff or the county prosecutor.
- Municipal support: assistance to city and township police departments on request of the chief of police.
- Multi-county cases: coordination when an offense, a suspect or a victim crosses county lines.
Field offices
Investigators are assigned to a field office located within the partner agency they support. Field office locations are not published. Correspondence about a case is conducted by the assigned investigator, in writing, from a majorcaseunit.org address.
